Releasing Holding Patterns from the Causal Consciousness
There are many ways to facilitate the release of our bound memories. Meditation techniques, particularly those that work with the subtle core of the body such as the core breath exercise in the last chapter, can help us let go of our defensive grip on ourselves. The core breath exercise works best if you follow it with a period of just sitting, without any particular focus of attention.
Fundamental consciousness is a disentangled, nongrasping dimension of our being. All of our experience moves through it without “sticking” anywhere. The subtle core of the body, and the points along it, are entranceways into this disentangled dimension. Therefore we can most easily let go of ourselves from this core. However, deeply entrenched defensive patterns will need more specific attunement to the psychological meaning and emotional content of the pattern, in order for us to let go of them.
Any bodywork method that penetrates into the physical or energetic levels of the binding or that helps people relax will also help the release of our holding patterns. I have found, though, that this release is often only temporary unless the consciousness within the binding is contacted. For example, people who receive very deep bodywork, such as Rolfing, often report that within a few months, the old tensions in their bodies have returned. This is because consciousness is basic to and organizes the energetic and physical levels of our being. For this reason, I have found self-attunement more effective than bodywork.
It is our childhood consciousness that organized the contraction of our energy and body. That same consciousness, if we can attune to it with our present-day consciousness, can let go of the contraction. Also, consciousness is fundamentally unbroken—it is the basis of our wholeness. When we contact the dimension of consciousness within our bound fragments, we contact our dimension of wholeness. This is the most direct, effective way of returning, or reconnecting, the bound fragments of ourselves to the wholeness of our consciousness. It heals our fragmentation at its root.
To contact the dimension of consciousness in our bound fragments, we need to penetrate not just deeply but also subtly into our binding, beyond the energetic and physical levels of the body. Here are two methods for achieving this subtle contact.
